Changelog

Each version of the app, and what is new in it.

What comes next is on the roadmap.

Slate 0.55.0#

You can now move notes and blocks by dragging them, and read a voice note's words while you are still speaking.

New

  • Drag and drop. Drag a note in the file list onto a folder to move it, onto a pane's tabs to open it there, or into a note to insert its link, or its embed if you hold Alt. To move the open note from the keyboard, use "Move note to…" in the command palette.
  • Moving blocks. Drag a block by the handle beside it to a new place and depth, with everything nested under it. On the iPhone, select the block, then press and hold it to lift it.
  • Live transcription. A voice note's words appear as you speak on the Mac and the iPhone. On Linux, turn on Live in Settings under Voice.
  • Spoken punctuation. Say "full stop", "comma", "question mark" or "new paragraph" while recording, in English, Spanish, French or German, and the transcript is punctuated for you.
  • Voice notes from outside the app. On the iPhone, start one in today's journal from Shortcuts, Siri, the Action Button, Control Centre or a Home Screen widget.
  • If a note changes on disk while you are still typing, Slate now combines your typing with the change, and asks only when both changed the same paragraph or list item.

Fixed

  • On the iPhone, a voice note played with no sound while the ringer was off.
  • On some Linux networks, sync, the update check and the speech model download kept failing while other apps connected.
  • Dictating in wind or traffic could write a caption such as "[wind blowing]" into the transcript.

Slate 0.54.0#

Slate now speaks French and German, and keeps both versions when a note changes on disk while you are still typing.

New

  • Language support added for French and German. Choose the language in Settings under General.
  • If a note changes on disk while Slate has unsaved changes, the banner now offers "Keep both", which saves your version as a copy beside the one from disk, so nothing from either side is lost.
  • You can read a voice note's transcript while it is being produced, instead of waiting for it to finish.

Fixed

  • A voice note recorded from the command palette went to today's journal instead of the open note.
  • Pressing pause on a playing voice note did nothing.

Slate 0.53.0#

Slate records voice notes, transcribes them on your device, and speaks Spanish.

New

  • Voice notes. Record into a note or today's journal and the transcript appears beneath the recording as text you can edit. On the iPhone this needs iOS 26.
  • Language support added for Spanish. Choose the language in Settings under General.
  • Audio in a note plays in place, and an exported page carries the player with it.
  • After an upgrade, Slate says what is new, and on the desktop it checks once a day for a newer version. Both can be turned off in Settings under General.
  • The sidebar runs the full height of the window, and Settings is grouped into categories.
